test drive — summer

SUMMER TEST DRIVE

Welcome to the test drive and thank you for your interest in The Village. This test drive is not game canon but will allow players the opportunity to experiment with game mechanics, the setting, and the flexibility of choice allowed by this game. The following prompts are examples of typical situations characters might face in the game. At least one thread from the TDM is required as part of the game's application process.

Prospective players are welcome to play with any of the established locations within Mathias.

The final round of applications will be processed in August.

( Recommended listening: )

UNTO OBLIVION

Summer has arrived in Mathias. The days are warm, the nights are cool, and much of the autumn debris has cleared from around town. Only a few stray leaves and fallen branches remain, their crisp colors at odds with the new season. It's something that may cause some to wonder, while others may not even notice the oddity.

New arrivals wake in the lush forest, with its winding paths twisting back on themselves as they branch in either direction. It isn't safe to stray from the path, some ominous feeling pushing you to not venture beyond what you can clearly see, but there is nothing impeding movement along those winding paths that cut through the seemingly infinite trees. Continue stumbling in one direction and you'll reach the small town, coming out near the mishmash of quaint houses that nestle beside crumbling ruins that once were homes. But choose the other and you'll seem to wander on forever, lost in an ocean of green leaves and speckles of sunlight that taunt you with a freedom you haven't yet attained. Suddenly, there seems to be a clearing up ahead—

And then nothing. The earth opens up before you in a ravine so deep that the bottom cannot be seen. The other side can be seen, tantalizingly out of reach, and there is the sense that safety is just beyond if only you could get there. But with that sensation is also the knowledge that if you stay here, you will die. The edge seems unsteady, like getting too close would set it crumbling and send you tumbling into that dark endless nothing that waits below...

TO SEE AND BE SEEN

Standing at the center of Mathias, the Town Hall is a modest two-story building that would be welcoming if not for the faded sign, chipped paint, and deafening silence within its empty halls. It's a typical government building, with a reception desk at the front and rows of identical offices within, the names half faded from each door. But what catches the attention is a large bulletin board on the main wall beside the reception desk, once meant to hold flyers or announcements for the community.

What it holds now is decidedly different. All across the board are push-pins with scraps of torn paper clinging to them, large ones and small, bits of writing visible at the frayed edges of a few. There on the floor are the formerly ordered scraps of paper, now ripped and crumpled and scattered in all directions. In an array of handwriting styles: requests for supplies should anyone find them, pieces of information shared in the hopes of someone understanding the strange symbols and mathematical equations, notes about those missing or recently deceased.

And with the papers ripped away from the board, what was once hidden is now fully visible: An eye. A strange, ornate eye with three lobes, painted in still-wet red. And upon close examination, a keen eye will realize that the paint is actually blood, perhaps even human.

The longer someone stands there, the more it will feel like they are being watched, even studied, with great interest. It's a sensation that lingers and stays with them even when they exit the building.

NOT AS IT SEEMS

From the outside, Baneberry Hall seems like your ordinary rich person's house, spawling and bigger than it has any right to be, but one would be mistaken to assume anything of the sort. Even the baneberries that cover the back lawn leading to the forest treeline are deceptive: harmless in appearance but fatal to any foolish enough to eat them.

The building is decaying from within. The rooms have begun to rot, from the parlors and libraries still done up in grand and expensive style to the bedrooms that have locks on the doors and bars on the windows. There are restraints in some of those bedrooms, while others are bereft of sharp objects. In the hall closets, there are identical sets of white pajamas of all sizes, and the offices have locked cabinets full of a rainbow of sedatives. The names on doors and in logbook lists are all smudged beyond legibility, and any paperwork has been water-damaged and weathered, leaving no indication of who may have been kept in those bedrooms or why. But within each room, there is an item that is familiar to one of the unfortunate souls now wandering its halls...

A beloved book, a handwritten letter from a loved one, a medal earned through years of service. As caked in dust and grime as anything else, each item is placed in its room as if it belongs there, as if it might have been there for years. But it couldn't have been. None of them have any memory of being here before, and that unnerving sense of familiarity is just their mind playing tricks on them.

Isn't it?

[She forces herself to breathe a little. He's not doing anything to actually hurt her, not really, just... intimidate and secure. Which, you know, she can appreciate. Or she would if she wasn't one one being intimidated and secured.

It's hard to focus on the 'he's not actually hurting me' part when that could change so quickly and without her being able to do a damn thing.

Unless.

Unless.

No, not yet, she's not going to pull some bullshit and push him into hurting her unless she has to.]

Um. [Breathe.] I mean we all just... woke up here. Not all at once, but it's been happening for weeks now. A couple of months even. There's like twenty-ish of us. No one knows who's doing it, or why they're doing it, or what they want-- [She's starting to pick up rambling speed again and stops herself.] Sometimes people disappear and come back and don't know they were gone, and sometimes they just... disappear.
flynnitup: (23)

[personal profile] flynnitup 2021-07-04 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Then why are you still here?

[Woke up here. No one knows who's doing it. Sometimes people just disappear.

It sounds impossible, except it doesn't. It sounds like just another terrible ploy, another awful development. Some kind of Rittenhouse prison? Where better to get rid of people than stranding them somewhere... somewhen? But why would they take random people? That is, if she was telling the truth.

Still. Too many holes in that story.]

Who's overseeing this place? Who is keeping you here?

Because we can't leave, duh. [A little wince at her own show of attitude.] There's this fog around the town, it's poisonous or something. It makes you sick if you're in it too long, and it kills you if you don't get out. It moves around, too, like... changes the parts of town it covers. But it's always there in the woods.

[She blinks a few times, forcing herself not to cry. She's not that scared, not yet. That's what she insists to herself anyway.]

We don't know who's doing it. Who they are or what they want. The only remotely worthwhile lead is this guy people just call the Shadow Man. He's this big... well, he looks like he's made of shadows, and he's got some kind of magic or superpower or someshit. I've never actually seen him but other people have.

[She gathers a deep breath and starts humming quietly to herself, an aimless little tune that could easily be taken as a self-comforting gesture. Very, very small seeds of light start to gather at Flynn's back. She's curious to see how he reacts to the idea of magic, sure--but she's also had about enough of this strongarming business.]

The Shadow Man.

[It's a scoff more than anything. Yeah, all right. He gets that she's probably scared but that is annoying. Unless the was to be taken more in a metaphorical sense?

Flynn has noticed the fog and the inexplicable sense of dread. And he doesn't like it. The most magic he's come in contact with had been Jiya's visions of the future and he had been quite... skeptical of those. No matter how crazy time travel was on its own, it had been based on science. But if science could accomplish feats like alternating time lines... why not poisonous fog?

Or the guise of a shadowy figure trapping people in a remote village? It's not like he hasn't done similar things in the past.]

You have to do better than that. People don't get kidnapped for no reason. If you don't know why they took you, you should think harder.

[But she's been cooperative and the humming brings another stab of guilt.]

Can you take me to the people who have seen this mysterious Shadow Man?

[ No, she can’t. She won’t. Not without giving them some kind of warning about this guy, not without fighting the idea that he can use her as leverage. She’s fucking sick of being used as leverage.

Athena squeezes her eyes shut, finally letting the tears escape, humming a little louder. Making it look as much as possible like she’s just freaking out. She can feel the Gift moving in the room, a little warped and a little out of tune, but she can also tell she has enough control right now for this to work if she’s careful. It's still going to take more than the humming though.

She lets the tune build, winding power around those little seeds of light without quite letting that power touch them. Keeps her eyes shut tight. This is going to be one hell of a flash. All at once she breaks into a chorus--]

Come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire!

[Multicolored light blazes up all around them, blindingly bright, turning the room into a harlequin swirl for about three seconds. Athena kicks out at the same time, eyes still shut, trying to shove away from the wall and break free to run before he can collect himself.

Please, please, let him need to collect himself.]

[It's good timing because it coincides with Flynn wondering if he can let her go and switch to slightly less bad cop now. He's not enjoying this but it's necessary, it really is, he has to be careful, too much is at stake...

Or maybe that's just what he's telling himself while making a defenseless teenager cry.

Dammit. His grip loosens slightly when she suddenly starts to... sing?]

What are you--

[Suddenly the world lights up around him and something hits his shin hard. Flynn yells in surprise and anger, clutching at his eyes and blinking rapidly, trying to shake off the daze. What? How? She had nothing on her, no weapon, no nothing...!

That's what he gets for letting his guard down. He should have known! He grunts angrily, his arm swinging blindly, trying to get a hold of an arm or piece of clothing as he stumbles back and forth.]

Get back here--!
citharede: (bh188)

[personal profile] citharede 2021-07-04 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Holy shit, it worked.

That throws her enough that she pauses in the doorway for a moment, looking back with wide eyes. Her own vision is a little spotty, even though she had her eyes closed.

There's that dumb question, Who is most likely to die first in a zombie apocalypse? It came up one night while Athena and her aunt were having dinner with Jeff and his daughter, Mel. Athena was the one who asked it. Lenore and Mel had looked at each other, looked at their respective relatives, and said, "You."

All this to say, she lingers in her surprise for just a moment too long and his hand closes around her wrist.]

Shit! [ Athena tries uselessly to tug her arm free, gives up on that, and leans forward to straight-up bite Flynn's hand while prying at his fingers with her free one.]

[personal profile] flynnitup 2021-07-05 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
[He can start making out the struggling shape in front of him and tries to pull her in when she--

When she--

Flynn yells, pulling his hand back with a curse. There's just a certain kind of insulting shock to getting your hand bitten and he shoves at her with the other one, more angry reflex than anything.]

Are you kidding me!?

[personal profile] citharede 2021-07-05 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
[Someone as small as she is getting pushed by someone as large as he is results in slightly more of an impact. She staggers, catching herself against the far wall of the hallway.]

Oh, what, I’m supposed to play nice in my attempts to get the fuck away from you, asshole?
flynnitup: (05)

[personal profile] flynnitup 2021-07-05 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
[That's... infuriatingly fair as an argument and his frustrated snarl says as much.]

What, you think I wasn't?

[He braces himself on the door frame, still blinking rapidly and trying to shake off the daze of the flare while his hand pounds from the bite.]

How did you do that?
citharede: (bh201)

[personal profile] citharede 2021-07-05 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Mr 'Maybe I like the blood and thunder thing.'

[But now that there's a little distance between them, she's not bolting. Not yet. If he makes a move toward her she'll be gone in a heartbeat, and she's pretty confident she's faster than him.]

I'll tell you if you don't fucking grab me again. And I'll answer your questions, like I said I would, because whoeverthefuck brought us here, we're better off fighting them than each other.

[personal profile] flynnitup 2021-07-05 03:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Wow, he can absolutely do without this callout culture, thank you.]

Fine.

[He holds up his hands to indicate that grabtime's over, then inspects his hand.]

You said this has been going on for months. And nobody knows anything about this mysterious Shadow Man? What are you people doing all day?
citharede: (bh139)

[personal profile] citharede 2021-07-05 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[You are cancelled, sir. She has receipts.

Athena eyes him warily for another moment, hoping she broke the skin. So there.]

Nuh-uh. Not in here. We're going out in the open where you can't pin me against anything.

[Except the dirt, but still.

She literally points at her eyes, points at him, then makes her way down the hall toward the exit.]

This place doesn't exactly cough up answers just because you want it to real hard, and half the time the shit we find just leads us in circles anyway. We think the Shadow Man might be this one guy from some old pictures around town. He looks in charge, and...

[She shivers slightly, her back still to Flynn.] And I saw him with two other men dragging a tied-up guy through one of the tunnels under Mathias. Yes, there are tunnels. There are also gates, and the locks can't be picked, and the only key that's the right size that we've found doesn't seem to belong to any goddamn one of them.
flynnitup: (Default)

[personal profile] flynnitup 2021-07-06 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
[Why does this keep happening to him, smh.

Flynn glares after her, a disgruntled expression on his face, but after a moment he trots along. Not without imitating her pointing gesture, of course. He's mature like that.

Once they're outside he leans back against the wall and crosses his arms. See? Can't make any grabby hands like that, at least not quickly. A sign of good faith for the explanations that are coming in. Even if they make this place sound like some bad late night B-movie rerun.]

Like a rat maze you have to figure out. Might be some giant experiment though I've never seen anything on that scale.

[Great. He always hated mind games. He hesitates, then holds up the journal that he pocketed earlier.]

What's with the dusty items in the loony bin? Have they always been there?
citharede: (bh35)

[personal profile] citharede 2021-07-06 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[She studies the journal curiously, wanting to ask about it, not wanting to get the snarling, angry stranger back. Whatever the journal is, it seems more important than the t-shirt of hers that Jeff found.]

No idea. They go pretty far to mess with our heads here, and we haven’t even been able to get to this side of town for very long.

…Did you… See anything when you touched it? Experience anything, like a memory?
flynnitup: (40)

[personal profile] flynnitup 2021-07-06 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

[That's an... odd question and he narrows his eyes.]

I did see some blinding lights, though. I don't suppose you know anything about that.
citharede: (bh175)

[personal profile] citharede 2021-07-06 02:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[ She narrows hers right back. ]

No. My turn first. Who are you? Who did you think took you? You thought someone did.
flynnitup: (21)

[personal profile] flynnitup 2021-07-06 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
[For a moment he looks like he might refuse, holding her gaze stoically, but eventually he relents.

If it is Rittenhouse they most likely know he's here already. And if it isn't... he'll need all the intel he can get.]

My name is Garcia Flynn. I've been hunting a shadow organization called Rittenhouse who I thought dumped me unceremoniously in the woods. Have you come across that name?
citharede: (bh78)

[personal profile] citharede 2021-07-06 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Athena frowns, giving her head a little shake in the negative.]

Never heard of them. I mean, not like I really do anything that could get the attention of a shadow organization anyway, but I'm pretty sure whoever they are they didn't do this.

[She gestures at their surroundings.]

People here are from like. Whole different worlds, different versions of Earth, sometimes not Earth at all. [A pause.] So in answer to your earlier question, yeah, the light was me. I'm Gifted. Which people only seem to get when I say it's magic, even though no one where I'm from has called it that for years.
flynnitup: (41)

[personal profile] flynnitup 2021-07-06 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
[He relaxes somewhat though he's not quite sure if he's relieved or not. If he would prefer Rittenhouse to be the culprit or not. If it wasn't them that means dealing with a whole new threat he knows absolutely nothing about and there's still the unanswered question about Lucy's journal...]

Different versions of Earth I'm familiar with. Different worlds not so much.

[What could this place be? Some bizarre nexus event where different timestreams met? Rufus or Mason would probably have five theories ready, Flynn can only surmise.]

So you made the light?

[He doesn't sound convinced but he's also not dismissing it either. He's a time traveling assassin, who is he to scoff at alternative timelines where magic exists?]

... That's pretty cool.

[Credit where credit is due.]
citharede: (bh82)

[personal profile] citharede 2021-07-06 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Athena blinks, surprised for a moment at that reaction, and then immediately preening a little.]

That's Gift 101. That, fire, and moving things around. [She frowns.] It's all fucky here though. The Gift. Other peoples' magics and powers and things. They aren't working the way they should. What I did in there--I shouldn't have had to do anything more than hum for something like that. It really is Gift 101.

[Is it wise to tell the total stranger who just grabbed and threatened you that your magical powers aren't working quite right? No, no it is not. This is a fact that will probably not occur to her for another five minutes or so.]
